Homework
Critique (due 03/01/2026)
Introduction
Find two (undergraduate students) or three (graduate students) news or scientific articles related to one or more personal or academic interests. The articles will be shared with me and perhaps others from class. You may have opportunities or obligations to discuss your topic with others from class. Each article should contain one or more visualizations of data relevant to the topic.
Pick one visualization from each source to discuss. The visualization could be anything from helpful or inspiring to confusing or frustrating.
- Briefly describe how well it does (or doesn’t) serve its apparent purpose.
- Use this assessment to give yourself one piece of advice, in other words “as a data visualization student, describe what you learned from it that might help you in your own work”.
- Mention anything that stands out mathematically, computationally, and so on.
Include a screenshot or embed a saved copy of each image with responses to the prompts above. If you write in quarto, you can use where you fill in the caption and replace image by the name and potentially png by jpg.
For each article/image, be sure to give a source and reasonable bibliographic entry/link for the source. Consider checking the status of your page at <archive.org> and sharing an available link or archiving your article page if possible.
Include your response(s) to the above items in a single .pdf file, uploaded to the appropriate D2L folder by Monday, March 2.
